A mini macaw is a macaw in every way that counts except size, and the size is exactly why we can take one. Hahn's, Severe and Yellow-collared macaws bring the whole macaw character — bold, clever, playful, deeply devoted to their flock, and long-lived enough to be a genuine member of the family rather than a pet — in a bird small enough for a two-household studio to look after properly. Full-size macaws are a different proposition altogether, and we don't board them; our cap is African Greys, small and medium cockatoos, and these three mini macaws. Even then we take them by prior arrangement only, so we can ready the right setup and talk through your bird properly before a single night is booked.
A mini macaw still wants far more room than a conure, and a bird cooped in a too-small space for a week is a miserable bird — loud about it, too. So room comes first. We give a boarding mini macaw a generous footprint and real out-of-cage time on a sturdy stand where it can stretch a full wingspan, climb, and survey the studio from a proper height. These are strong, active birds that need to move; a stay that lets one do that is a stay it tolerates well, and a confined one is not a stay we'd offer.
A mini macaw's beak is small only by macaw standards, and it treats most cage furniture as a suggestion. Flimsy perches and lightweight toys don't survive the week and aren't safe to give a bird this determined, so a boarding mini macaw gets thick hardwood perches that fit a big grip and chunky, destructible toys it's meant to demolish — that demolition is healthy work for the beak, not bad behaviour. We watch what a mini macaw is chewing as carefully as what it's eating, keep its diet exactly as it is at home, and respect that beak with handling that's confident, unhurried, and never a contest of wills.
Mini macaws are brilliant and intensely social, and they don't do well ignored. We keep a boarding mini macaw mentally busy with foraging and rotated puzzles, and — just as important — we keep it included, near the gentle activity of the studio rather than shut away. Their voice is part of the deal: a macaw's contact call is loud by design, meant to carry across a rainforest canopy, and a Hahn's manages that at a fraction of the body size. We don't try to train it out of a guest — a content, well-engaged bird simply calls less. We watch a long-lived bird closely day to day, because the species masks illness like every parrot does.
Because a mini macaw needs the right space and a proper conversation first, these stays are arranged ahead rather than booked on a whim — please reach out well before your dates. We'd rather be plain about the cap here than after you've made plans. Full-size macaws — greenwings, blue-and-golds, scarlets, militaries and the other big Ara — need more room, more equipment and more hands than this house has, so we don't board them, and the same goes for the large cockatoos.
