Vol. I · The Guest Book Birds who've stayed, owners who've returned

The guest book.

Every bird who stays gets a card in our binder — name, species, favourite foods, the thing they refused to do. Here are some of our favourites, with a note from the owner who came back.

Mango · Sun Conure
"Mango came home singing a song he didn't know before. I have no idea where he learned it. Five stars."
— Hannah P., Armitage
Theo · African Grey
"Theo is suspicious of new humans. He stepped up for Derek on day two. That's basically a miracle."
— Tom B., Summerhill
Pip & Posy · Budgies
"My two were boarded together. Same cage. They were so happy in their photos I was almost offended."
— Padma N., Huron Heights
Cleo · Quaker Parrot
"Cleo plucks when she's stressed. She came back smoother than she left. Speechless."
— Rachel M., Stonehaven
Wally · Cockatiel
"The daily photos kept me sane on a difficult trip. The bird is fine. I'm fine now too."
— Aleks D., Aurora
Otis · Pionus
"Otis won't eat for strangers. He ate for them. I asked what they did. They shrugged."
— Sarah C., King City
Marigold · Caique
"Sent her with three toys, she came back with four. They made her one. Came home calmer than she's ever been."
— Liam G., Sharon
Bramble · Lovebird pair
"They handled both of mine without losing patience. Lovebirds will test you. They passed."
— Naomi K., Newmarket Main St.

A longer one

From someone who tried three other places first.

"I went through three sitters before Northbird. The first lost my cockatiel's favourite toy and didn't tell me. The second sent one photo in five days. The third was clean, professional, expensive — and my bird came home five ounces lighter and refusing pellets for two weeks.

I almost gave up on travelling. A friend told me about Claire and Derek. I drove up to meet them before I'd commit to anything. The room was small, sunny, smelled like coffee and bird seed instead of bleach. Derek sat on the floor and offered my bird a piece of millet without making eye contact, which is exactly what you do with a nervous parrot.

That was three years and eleven bookings ago. My bird is the same weight when she comes home as when she leaves. Sometimes she's a little fatter. I get a photo every morning. When I came back from Italy last fall, she was sitting on Claire's shoulder watching a kettle boil. I'm not sure what magic they do but I don't need to know.
